Information systems are an essential part of modern business operations. Companies such as Starbucks, Amazon, and Walmart have implemented their information systems to improve efficiency and customer service. By examining the specific systems used by these three companies, one can gain insight into how these systems have had a profound impact on society. Specifically, these systems allow for greater levels of data collection, enabling businesses to understand customer expectations and behaviors better.

Starbucks is a well-known and successful coffee chain that has been using an information system since its establishment. This system, known as a Point of Sale (POS) system, helps Starbucks track sales and manage inventory. The POS system allows Starbucks to keep an accurate record of what items are selling, what items are in stock, and how the staff is performing (Connaghan, 2022). This tool helps Starbucks anticipate customer needs and ensure that stores are adequately stocked, providing customers with the best possible experience. The use of the POS system has allowed Starbucks to gain an advantage over other coffee chains by providing customers with a more efficient and personalized service. This system has also enabled Starbucks to understand its customer base better, thus allowing them to develop targeted marketing strategies and optimize its inventory (Connaghan, 2022). By utilizing the POS system, Starbucks has been able to increase its profitability and ensure customer satisfaction.

Amazon is a leading online retailer that provides customers with a wide range of products and services. Amazon utilizes a comprehensive suite of information systems to support its operations, most notably an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (Mallinger, 2021). This system integrates all of Amazon’s different business functions, such as order management, inventory control, and customer service (Mallinger, 2021). With this system, Amazon is able to track orders, manage inventory, process payments, and provide customer service in a more efficient manner. By using the ERP system, Amazon is able to streamline its operations and increase efficiency.

Walmart is a multinational corporation that operates a variety of businesses, including retail stores, wholesale clubs, and e-commerce websites. Walmart’s success is largely attributed to its extensive use of information systems. The company has implemented a Supply Chain Management (SCM) system to streamline operations and increase efficiency (Rickerby, 2023). The SCM system enables Walmart to track orders and shipments, manage inventory levels, and optimize pricing. Through the SCM system, Walmart can provide customers with needed products promptly while also achieving higher efficiency and profitability (Rickerby, 2023). By using the SCM system, Walmart has been able to stay ahead of the competition regarding customer service and satisfaction.

In conclusion, the utilization of information systems by companies such as Starbucks, Amazon, and Walmart has had a massive influence on society. Through these systems, these companies have been able to increase their operational efficiency, as well as provide customers with improved customer service. Additionally, these systems have enabled them to gain a competitive edge over their competition, as they can provide customers with a more tailored and efficient experience. Moreover, these systems have allowed these companies to use their resources better and increase their profits. Furthermore, these information systems have enabled these companies to gain insight into customer behavior, making more informed decisions and better meet their customers’ needs. Without the utilization of these information systems, these companies would not be able to offer the same level of service and would not have had such a profound effect on society.
